Is there more to sleeping properly than just feeling rested? Research shows that there is a strong connection between getting enough sleep and maintaining a healthy immune system.
Dr. MacFarlane notes that getting enough sleep is particularly important for young children. “There’s also many anabolic processes, beyond immune function,” he says. “Growth hormone is released only during a certain stage of deep non-dreaming sleep. If young children have sleep that is disrupted enough, they will literally stop growing until they get enough sleep.”
